Kayseri Overview |
Kayseri, situated on the eastern edge of Cappadocia, was once the principal city of ancient Cappadocia. It is located 316 km (196 miles) from Ankara, 770 km (478 miles) from Istanbul and 102 km (63 miles) from Nevsehir. Lying in the shadow of Mt Aergius, this city of 450,000 is best known for its carpet industry.
Kayseri has earned a reputation for finely woven silk carpets with the colours and patterns of the local wool. The town's most renowned exports, however, are manti and patisma. Manti is a small meat-filled ravioli topped with a garlicky yogurt sauce and pastirma is a spicy, cured beef, flavoured with red pepper, lots of garlic, and fenugreek seed. |

Kayseri Essentials |
Hunat Hatun Mosque - Hunat Hatun who was called Mahperi, or Fairy Moon by her husband, was the daughter of the Christian governor of Alanya, Kir Ford.
When Alanya was conquered by the Selçuk Sultan Alaaddin Kaykubat, the agreement included Kir Ford's daughter's hand in marriage.
The Hunat Hatun Külliyesi was built in 1237 in honor of Hunat Hatun. The complex comprises of a mosque, a medrese, a tomb, and a public bath.
Manti Restaurant - This manti house has created a reputation for itself and visitors to Kayseri often take a detour for a good meal. There are lots of other items on the menu but the manti, a small meat-filled ravioli topped with a garlicky yogurt sauce is what you should try. The also have live music on a Saturday night.
Çifte Kümbet - The Çifte Kümbet is the tomb of Alaaddin Kaykubat's second wife. She was the mother of the chosen heir. Keyküsrev II the son of Hunat Hatun, murdered her and her two sons and then ascended the throne after poisoning his father at a banquet. Called the "twin tomb" but only one has survived.
Ethnographic Museum - The ethnographic collection has been moved from the Hunat Hatun Medrese to the inside of this Ottoman Pasa's mansion.
This beautifully restored home, built between 1417 and 1419 and one of the few examples of vernacular architecture surviving in Kayseri, is now home to several small collections.
The most striking pieces housed here are the very beautiful tiles taken from the Hunat Hamami and the 13th-century minaret. Islamic tombstones are on display in the gardens.
The Citadel - The Citadel stands in the heart of the city and its dark basalt stones are carved out of the volcanic rock from Mount Erciyes looming in the distance. As heir to a fortress, Selçuk Sultan Keykubat I reinforced the Citadel in 1224.
He buildt over the foundations and added 19 seemingly invincible towers and inner walls. The contrast between the crude Byzantine stones and the carefully cut Selçuk ones is a clear indication of the passage of time. Mehmet the Conqueror, who repaired the Citadel, added the small Fatih Camii over a previous prayer hall. The inner court and outer walls now bustle with a bazaar. |
