| Her ideal geographic location on the Aegean coast and moderate climate has made Izmir the target of many conquests and hostile invasions. In 1923, a cataclysmic fire broke out in the Turkish quarter and thousands perished in the flames, resulting in the extradition of the remaining Greek population in exchange for the ethnic Turks living in Greece, effectively cancelling all Greek influence in the city. Today only international travellers and high-powered business leaders invade Turkey’s third largest city and second largest port.

Kadifedale – A magnificent old castle set on Mount Pagus offers panoramic views of the surrounding countryside, and visitors’ picnic in its grounds.
