Viseu Overview |
Viseu - Strategically located in history as an important crossroad since Roman times, its strong architectual buildings reflect its heritage as a centre of a wine-growing region.
The surrounding area has a number of decorated, large, standing stones with detailed carved symbolic lines, but nobody knows from which era of civilization they come from or what the design means.
The town is an impressively suited medieval town, dominated by the Cathedral and bishop's palace, now a museum. |

Viseu Essentials |
Museu de Grao Vasco - Housed in the former palace of the bishop, its has a large number of paintings and religious items from Vasco Fernandes, an artist from the 15th Century, internationally acclaimed for his naturalism and attention to detail.
Cathedral - Probably constructed in the 13th century originally, it has lost some of its character with a number of reconstructions in the 16th and 17 th Centuries. It still has the facade of the Renaissance, but its interior is essentially Gothic with its basic colour schemes playing brilliant gilding against the muted gold stones.
Rua Direita - The main street where merchants sell pottery, wrought iron and wood carvings. The unique quilts and carpets of the region as well as the best selections from the region's best artisans are sold here and at the Casa de Ribiera.
Cova de Viriato - The birthplace of the local hero, a Lusitanian rebel leader, Viriatus. A combination of Robin Hood and Spartacus, he made his camp here and plotted the moves that turned the tide against the Roman invasion.
Dao wine - The centre of this wine-growing region, its granite soil produced in the mountain ranges and brought down by the rivers, is responsible for producing the regions wine of ruby-red or lemon-yellow Dao. |
