| Oporto Overview |
Oporto is one of the most vibrant cities in Portugal. It's name in English is 'The Port' and is given to the sweet wine, the countries name and language. Oporto is the largest city in northern Portugal and though industry dominates, the city has enough culture to have been named European Cultural Capital in 2001.
The city enjoys a magnificent location on the gorge cut by the Douro River, with it's graceful bridges and church towers reaching up to the sky. |

Caves Ramos Pinto - A visit here would not be complete without a wine tour and tasting. This interesting historic producer is one of the best known and gives a state of the art tour.
Igreja de Sao Francisco - The waterfront church of St Francis was originally constructed in the 14th century, and it's wooden baroque decorations are a joy to behold. There is a museum of the same name nearby.
Cathedral - Porto's pride is located high above the city. As well as an interesting old church, the cathedral commands a fabulous city vista.
Museu Nacional de Arte Moderna - One of the most popular museums in Portugal is housed in an art deco building. There is a perminant collection of modern art and many temporary exhibits. Surrounded by a lovely landscaped park.
Walking tour - Discover the three magnificent bridges over the Douro on one of the walking tours or go out along the river on your own.

| Festas de Sao Joao (24th June) - This is an interesting festival, where everyone takes to the streets armed with leeks to amicably hit each other over the head with them. (The Welsh might want to be here at this time) |
