Useful Tips
Traffic - by Phillip from Paarl
The train tends to go where the bus does not and if you plan properly you can get about to most places in Faro. Of course, car hire makes it much easier. Having said that I must just point out that there are only two speeds for Portuguese drivers, fast and faster! Add that to the flock of tourists in hire cars and you've got your annual adrenaline dose. Unless you have a profound death-wish, do not even think about hiring a cycle.
Speed limit - by Harry from England
Speed limit on Motorway: 120kph/74mph Speed limit in Towns: 50kph/31mph Speed limit on Major roads: 100kph/62mph Do not EVER, EVER drink and drive here...TRUST ME.....the limit is so low and the penalty can include jail time...
Safety - by Caroline from Wellington
My strongest advice is not to drink AT ALL if you drive anywhere as the blood/alcohol limit is extremely low and being caught may result in imprisonment. Whenever I went out and enjoyed a few drinks, I found that calling a taxi was the most effective and reliable means of transport.

Faro Overview
Faro is Portugal's most southerly province and the starting point for most people's journey onward to the Algarve, it is surprising more people do not stay in Faro itself. Faro is a modern city just a short drive from some spectacular beaches. Unlike many nearby resorts, Faro has maintained an authentic Portuguese feel with an overall more laid back atmosphere to the surrounding beach resorts. Despite a number of important historic buildings being destroyed during the Great Earth Quake of 1755, the old part of the city still remains a fascinated place to visit and a good retreat from the more modem direction which Faro has taken over the last 10 years.

Faro Essentials
Church of São Francisco - Built in the 18th Century the church of São Francisco houses some impressive decorated with tiled scenes of the life of St Francisco and probably some of the fines gilt wood carvings in all of the Algarve. The church is in remarkably good condition considering its age.

Museu Arqueológico - Archeological Museum housing local and national treasures. The most important exhibit is a third-century Roman mosaic of Neptune and the four winds. The museum in situated in a sixteenth century convent.

Largo da Sé - A peaceful square flanked by orange trees and the bishop's place. A great place to take an evening stroll and unwind after a hard day's sightseeing. This is the historic core of Faro.

Palace of Estoi - A short drive outside of Faro (8km) this beautiful palace is the best example of Romantic architecture in the Algarve. Built in the the second half of the 19th century, the palace is divided into three levels. The upper section holding the palace and magnificent front gardens, the middle level with a larch fountain, the lower level holds a series of statues. Also near to Estoi is a Roman complex dating back to the first century.

The Ruins of Milreu - 7km outside of Faro city centre, the Ruins of Milreu are characteristic of a traditional Roman villa with a courtyard surrounded by a gallery of columns. There are some beautiful mosaics throughout the surrounding walls of the villa remains, especially near the staircase of the temple. The temple was originally built in dedication to Neptune.
