Useful Tips |
| Parking - by Molly from Fife |
| Getting around by car in Amsterdam is easy, the many roads are excellent although peak traffic times can mean traffic jams and slow progress. Ensure that you have enough small change for parking meters; there are parking meters everywhere and parking is expensive. Remember the efficient Dutch are quick to take action so take note of parking periods and get back on time to avoid the frustration of a traffic fine or clamped wheels or even having your car towed away. |
| Parking - by Mia from United Kingdom |
| Parking in Amsterdam is a bit of a mission, there are not enough parking bays and none of the parking areas are free. Even if you think you have found free parkin...No....make sure you find the pay station other wise you will come back tro a bright yellow wheel clamp. |
| Safety - by Stan from Johannesburg |
| For most of my life I have wanted to visit Amsterdam and then one day I got my chance. YES it was all I expected it to be and more. I thought it would be a bit dangerous but I felt very safe at all times. The locals are friendly (just don't stand on the bike lanes, that tends to annoy them). Keep your bags and such in view at all times and you will enjoy your stay as much as I did. |
Amsterdam Overview |
Built on a dam in the 13th century, the city of Amsterdam has went from strength to strength ever since. Situated on the river Amstel this cosmopolitan city is has a unique atmosphere and is a favourite with tourists and travellers from across the globe.
With fantastic museums, wild nightlife and Europe’s most famous red light district Amsterdam has something for everyone. Easy to get around by foot, or even better bike, Amsterdam is a welcoming and attractive city to visit. |

Amsterdam Essentials |
Rijksmuseum - The Rijksmuseum is Holland’s premier collection of fine art with work from artists such as Rembrandt and Steen. This excellent museum should only improve over coming years as a massive refurbishment is currently taking place.
Van Gogh Museum - The Van Gogh museum has around 200 paintings from the great artist as well as some of the Japanese prints that inspired Vincent’s work. Some of the museums’ top works include ‘The Potato Eaters’ and ‘The Yellow House in Arles’.
Seksmuseum - Located near Dam square the Seksmuseum has a large collection of pornographic material, quite apt in the city with the largest red light district in Europe.
Canals - Despite the poor quality of the water in the canals there really is no better way to see the city than by boat. The canals can be even more enjoyable in winter when Amsterdam often freezes over.
Begijnhof - The Begijnhof is a group of tiny houses which enclose a courtyard and is like a peaceful oasis in an otherwise busy area. |

Amsterdam Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Sinterklaas (6th of December) - The traditional Dutch Christmas is celebrated on the 6th of December, although presents are handed out the night before. This time of the year is always filled with festivities.
Holland Festival - The Holland Festival is the countries biggest arts festival and runs throughout the month of June. This celebration of culture covers theatre, dance, music and opera. |
