The town of Varese lies to the north west of Milan and is a popular tourist destination because of its lovely natural scenery of lakes and mountains as well as its old town charm.
Sometimes refered to as the garden city, Varese has numerous stunning gardens and villa's. Highlights include Villa Litta Modigliani built on Mirabella Hill, with its English style garden and centuries old Cedar Tree. |

Rocca di Angera - built on the rocks overlooking Lake Maggiore, the fort was constructed in the about the year 1000 but alterations and additions continued through the centuries. The Scaliger Wing now houses an interesting Doll Museum containing a collection of 17th century to 1940's dolls, books, toys and childrens clothes.
Largo di Varese - located at the city gates of Varese, the lake and surrounding area has an abundance of birds and fish such as trout, barbel and waterhen. Today the banks of the lake are lined with impressive villas of rich Milan families.
Santa Caterina del Sasso - this cave like sanctuary is one of the prettiest places on lake Maggiore and can be reached via car on the Lombard bank or by ferry which offers the most spectacular views. The site also has a church made up of three smaller churches from various centuries.
Palazzo E Giardin Estensi - origionally built in 1760 and latter redesigned, the palace is decorated with beautiful frescoes and the impressive Hall of Honour with its huge fireplace is now open to the public.The most striking feature of the palace are the magnificent Italian gardens with the pool in the centre of the square and the pathways, flowerbeds and lawns.
Sacro Mante di Varese - the Sacro Monte is a 2km long route through the Campo del Fiori Regional Park and is connected to Varese by a funicular. The route has 14 chapels on it that illustrate the mysteries of the rosarry. The churches are decorated with terracota statues, elegant architecture and frescoes.

La Motta - celebrated on Sant Antonio on the 17th of January. The city of Varese meets in the characteristic La Motta Quarter, where in the evening a giant bonfire that can be seen from the top of Sacro Monte is lit.
Giubbiana - held on the Thursday following La Motta, this is an ancient feast where women, men and children come together to feast and celebrate. |
