Trento Overview |
The picturesque little city of Trento is the capital of the Trentino region of northern Italy and is known for it's mix of Italian and German influence.
Trento is a city of history, art and culture with its many museums, monuments, historical buildings and beautiful city squares.
Among the most splendid examples of architecture in the city are the 15th century Duomo cathedral, Castelo del Buonconsiglo built in the 13th century and the Renaissance Santa Maria Maggiore church. Trento is also blessed with striking natural scenery as the city is situated on the banks of the Adige river and is surrounded by mountains and valleys. |

Trento Essentials |
Buonconsiglio Castle - the castle which used to be the home of the Bishop Princes was built in the 13th century and is made up of various buildings. In 1475 the castle was altered according to a Gothic Venetian style and includes a castle museum and lovely gardens.
Piazza del Duomo - the square situated in the heart of Trento is surrounded by beautiful, historic buildings. To the east is Palazzo Pretorio that houses the Diocesan museum, in the south is magnificent Duomo cathedral and in the square itself is the lovely Fountain of Neptune.
Duomo Cathedral - this 13th century cathedral is built in a severe, romantic Gothic style and has an impressive 15th century tower. The interior houses St Anne's alter with decorations by fagliolino, Crucifix chapel and the stone statue of the Drowned People's Madonna.
Monte Bondone - the mountain is known for its rich alpine flora, thegrass of which is used for the inovatetive hay baths therapy. Monte Bandone is ideal for sports enthusiasts, in Summer visitors can mountain bike, horse ride, mountain climb and paraglide and in Winter there is an ice rink and the slopes turn into an alpine ski resort. Also on Monte Bondone is the Alpine Botanical Garden.
Via Belenzani - this is one of Trento's most beautiful streets with Venetian style Renaissance buildings, some of which have facades adorned with stunning frescoes, lining the street. Noteworthy buildings include the Palazzo Geremia, Palazzo Thun which houses the Town Hall and the contemporary Casa Alberti Colico. |

Trento Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Feste Vigilane - held in June, this festival pays tribute to the patron saint of Trento. Festivities include locals dressed in costumes that evoke the traditions of the Renaissance and Medieval city and colourful parades through the city.
Fiera di San Guiseppe - held in March, the St Josephs Fair transformes the entire city into a vivd open air market.The centre of fair is cathedral square with its kaleidoscope of flower sellers. |
