Useful Tips |

| I just got back from being stationed in Sicily for three years with the Navy. When driving there, do not hug the center line, stay more toward the shoulder. The Sicilian drivers will pass wether there is on coming traffic or not, so it is best just to swallow your pride and stay out of there way. Also if they flash their lights at you when you are at a stop, this means DON'T MOVE 'cause I'm coming through. Last tip is, if there is a man in the parking lot helping you park (even when you don't need help)make sure you give him at least one euro when you leave. If you stiff these gentlemen, you may end up having your car broken into or stolen the next time you go there. Have Fun |
Sicily Overview |
Sicily is completely different to mainland Italy and the island feels as much Greek as it does Italian. From the food to the hybrid language Sicily offers a truly unique experience.
Sicily is the largest island in the Mediterranean and has many draws, particularly the bustling city of Palermo and Mount Etna, Europe’s highest volcano. Beautiful weather, fantastic sights and a unique way of life make Sicily a fantastic place to spend some time. |

Sicily Essentials |
Mount Etna - This beautiful and mysterious volcano is a spectacular site and a great place to see. A must if you visit the island, but be warned it recently erupted.
Lo Spasimo - A sumptuous and romantic ruin, Lo Spasimo is situated in the capital Palermo. The ruin has a rich history and displays, plays and other entertainment are on offer at different times of the year.
Galleria 61 - Opened in 1996 this art gallery is full of Sicilian and Italian contemporary work.
Botanical Garden - One of the most important botanical gardens in Europe is located in Palermo. Laid out in 1789 along the western edge of Villa Giulia the garden has some of the most beautiful and rare plant species found anywhere.
Montreale Cathedral - Within this cathedral are some of the most fantastic mosaics in the world. The roman building was built in 1172 and is a superb structure inside and out. The cathedral is also home to an interesting museum. |

Sicily Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Skiing on Mt. Etna (December to March) - The experience of skiing down an active volcano is thrilling in itself, but any risks are well worth taking to witness the fantastic views on offer.
Festino di Santa Rosalia (July) - This festival celebrates the memory of Palermo’s patron saint, Santa Rosalia. Massive parades, fireworks and music are all part of the celebrations. |
