| Macerata Overview |
Macerata - is the capital of the Italian province of Marche, which lies
between the Apennines and the Adriatic.
It is relatively unknown to many foreign travellers but is a pleasant, historical town that is home to an ancient university.
The surrounding countryside is some of the loveliest in Marche and the annual opera and ballet festival attracts some of the most famous artists in the world.
It is also home to a wonderful collection of Italian modern art.

Piazza della Liberta - is in the centre of the old town. The Renaissance
Loggia dei Mercanti was donated to the town by Pope Paul 111 in the 16th
century.
Palazzo Ricci - Via Ricci, The gallery houses an excellent collection of
Italian contemporary modern art including a selection of work by the
Italian futurists.
Pinacoteca Civica - The collection in this gallery is worth checking out as it
includes works ranging from the Renaissance artist Crivelli to the futurist
Cagli Duomo.
Piazza Strambi - This Baroque church contains a statue of Macerata's patron
saint, Giuliano who cut off his arm in remorse after inadvertently killing
his parents. The remains of the severed limb is now kept in the church
strong room and is shown on request but 24 hours notice must be given to the
Church authorities.
Marche - Take a trip out into the surrounding countryside, as it is some of
the most attractive in the Marche province and is home to numerous Medieval
villages, abbeys and churches

| Macerata Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Stagione Lirica,/b> - The opera and ballet festival is held annually in July to
August in a lovely open-air venue. In previous years the festival has featured the likes of Placido Domingo and José Carreras.
Cantamaggio (Canti di Maggio) - This festival usually takes place at Pioraco
near to Macerata in April each year. The young people of Pioraco congregate in the local cottages and sing impromptu folk songs in rhyming couplets.
