Lucca Overview |
Lucca is one of the richest cities in Tuscany. It is located approximately 17km north east of Pisa in one of Italy’s most affluent agricultural regions.
Its wealth was created through the silk and olive oil trades. It is a traditional place with a long history of independence. The famous composer Giacomo Puccini was born in the city in 1858.

Lucca Essentials |
The Duomo - This is an impressive church with beautiful carvings and sculptures. The interior contains some famous works by Matteo Civitali (1435–1501).
The Museo della Cattedrale – The museum is located in a converted twelfth-century building. It houses some wonderful stone heads both equine and human and a Limoges reliquary containing stories about the life of St Thomas ŕ Becket.
The church of San Giovanni - The church was Lucca's cathedral until the eighth century. Archaeological digs on the site have revealed the remains of Roman mosaics and a Carolingian church.
Museo Nazionale di Villa Guinigi – The museum is situated in a restored mansion. It has many archaeological finds, sculptures and 16th century paintings.
Caffe di Simo - Via Fillungo 58 This is the most famous cafe-bar in the city as it was Puccini's favourite meeting place. It still has an attractive nineteenth-century atmosphere.

Lucca Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
The Lucchese September festival – This is usually held in September and includes candlelit processions, jazz, classical and pop music festivals.
Palio de San Paolino - Lucca (July)- This is a medieval festival celebrating St Paolino, the patron saint of Lucca. There are costume parades, crossbow shooting events and flag throwing contests.
