Do not hire a car from Irish car rental.com or Sixt car rentals Ltd. They appear to be the cheapest however, they double their price through hidden extras such as a fee to pick the car up! They insist on filling the tank and then charge a very high cost for petrol. They were extremely aggressive on the phone when we tried to find out why we had been over charged.

Train services are not the most regular and only cover a few of the major cities. You can get to basically anywhere you want, within reason, with a bus, but for me the best option is to hire a small car at the airport and give yourself the freedom to go where you want at your own pace. There will always be something that catches your eye as you drive along, and you can simply stop and take a look for as long as you like. There are no traffic problems to speak of, except maybe in the major cities during rush hour. Roads are not the best in the world, but not the worst, and mostly a pleasure to drive on.

In rural country areas please be SO careful of tractor drivers. They dont indicate what they are doing and can stop at any minute. Just be careful when you are driving behind one as with narrow country roads you may not be able to overtake for some time.
