| Naxos is rather a large island. Sometimes the distances between places is quite far; so I think it is very useful to rent a car, bike or at least a bicycle, but drive carefully! |

| A town made up of four distinct sections, a bustling harbour lined with cafes and loud with the cries of gulls and fishermen, Nea Chora to the south, packed with hotels, apartments and restaurants, while Venetian Kastro and the mediaeval Bourg divide the old town above the harbour. South of Naxos lie some fine beaches, including Grotta, where the ruins of submerged Cycladic buildings can be seen, and the beautiful white sands of remote Plaka Beach. |

Kastro The ruins of an old Venetian castle with one of the original twelve houses serving as a Museum displaying early household goods, stands above Naxos.
The Byzantium Museum This museum has excellent collections from the 8th-10th century found on Naxos and the surrounding Cycladic islands.
The Catholic Cathedral Dating back to the 13th century, the church is the last resting place of those who lived in the houses within the castle walls.
Myrditiotissa From the waterfront, the white chapel of Myrditiotissa can be seen on its man-made islet, as well as the marble Portara archway set on its own peninsula.
Beaches The beaches of Naxos become more attractive the further south they are, with the white sands, deep blue waters and sun-tanned nudists making Plaka the best. |
