Useful Tips |

| Taxis are awfully cheap, but to hire a car is the unsurpassed way to get to the most interesting places, which are mostly a few of hours away from the main hubs. Please do not hire scooters as the roads are covered in sand and even if you are experienced, as I am, it’s still difficult on two wheels. |
Ioannina Overview |
The old town of Ioannina is situated on the south shore of the great lake of Pamvotidha, at the foot of Mount Mitsikeli. The town sits on a rocky promontory that juts out into the water, with it's fortifications being accentuated by bastions and minarets. Ioannina is largely a modern city, one of the fastest-growing provincial capitals of Greece.
There are still a few historical sights and monuments from the Ottoman era; and Ioannina is the starting point for tours to the caves of Perama. Ioannina is also home to a large university and millitary population, which means that there is always a party to be had. |

Ioannina Essentials |
Ioannina Museum - This excellent provincial museum has a number of interesting exhibitions, including graves and burial sites in Epirus; as well as items Paleolithic implements through the Bronze Age to Roman times. The museums main attraction are the lead tablets, which were found at the Oracle of Dodona.
Perama Caves - The village of Perama, located just out of Ioannina, are home to the largest system of caves in Greece. The Perama Caves extend for kilometres below a low hill on the outskirts of the town. There is a mandatory 45 minute tour that takes you along a path through the caves, with explanations on the different formations.
Turkish Bazaar - Located near the walled town and just off the main street called Averoff. The Turkish Bazaar is a great place to browse through the shops where the men are still practicing the old crafts, like metal smiths; jewelry makers; cobblers; and tailors.
Byzantine Museum - The museum is housed in one of the acropolis buildings inside the castle of Ioannina. The exhibitions in the museum display collections of early Christian and Byzantine sculptures; excavation findings from Arta; pottery; manuscripts; as well as early editions of printed books.
The cathedral of Saint Athanassios - The cathedral dates back to before the rebellion of Dionyssios, but was burnt down in 1820 and rebuilt in 1833. The cathedral was built in the style of a three-aisle basilica with domes and vaults. It is a beautiful cathedral and well worth a visit. |

Ioannina Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
