Useful Tips |
| Scenic drives - by David Hutchinson from Washington UK |
| My tip is to go well informed. Do not rely on locally bought maps or the one you get from the car hire place. These bear little relation to the actual roads. If you want to explore the interior on the very narrow roads into the mountain villages, take with you from home the Rough Guide map which is excellent it is made using global positioning satellite and is 100% accurate. An obvious tip is to fill up with petrol because you won't find petrol in the mountains. A few years ago we nearly came to grief by underestimating the amount of petrol the car was consuming air con tends to use up more fuel we only made it back to Spili by coasting downhill wherever possible! |

| The drive over the mountains to the Elafonissi is hairraising but quite spectacular |

| Your best bet is to rent a car if you want to tour Crete extensively and you don't have too long to do it. Prices vary, so its best to shop around. We were asked to pay 400 euros for a week at one agency but ended up paying 180 euros. |
Crete Overview |
| This ancient island of myth and legend has survived tidal waves, earthquakes and natural disasters in its history that began as early as 6000 BC. Different civilisations have controlled the island from the Minoans and King Minos, to Greeks, Romans, Saracens, Turks and briefly the Germans during WWII. Today it has a flourishing agricultural economy, a thriving tourist trade and a warm hospitable people who share their great beaches and land with cosmopolitan pride. |

Crete Essentials |
Climate - Long lazy summers that last until deep into October make Crete one of the best holiday destinations of all the Greek islands.
Geography The less exploited mountainous interior and southern coastal reaches are a welcome change, but the sunny beaches are a hard act to follow.
Minoan Palaces Visitors can explore the Labyrinth and Palace of King Minos at Knossos where Sir Arthur Evans discovered remnants of the ancient civilizations.
Golden Eagles and Gryphon Vultures In the White Mountains National Park high above the craggy peaks fly the endangered gryphon vultures and Golden Eagles.
Spinalonga Island Enter Spinalonga through Dantes Gate and the iron-barred tunnel leading to the leper colony that thankfully no longer operates as such. |

Crete Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Feast of all Saints (June) The protected Island of All Saints is open to visitors on this day only.
Feast of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary - (August 15) A celebration throughout Greece.
