| During World War II, Gibraltar's value as a base was greatly increased by the construction of the airfield. It was originally just an emergency landing base for the Navy. The runway was extended onto reclaimed ground to handle larger aircraft. It is still run by the RAF but it is also used by several airlines serving Gibraltar. The road to Spain runs directly through the middle of the runway and has to be closed when aircraft land and take-off. Flights are connected to Heathrow, Gatwick, Stanstead and Manchester and also to Morocco at Tangiers, Casablanca and Marakesh. |
