Since the wall came down Berlin has truly become on of the worlds most interesting city, often leading the way on the music and arts scene. The massive German capital is located to the north-east of Germany, and while evidence of the divide is still evident it now only adds to Berlin’s intrigue.
There is something of interest to everyone in this city, with its riches of museums, theatres, bars and an extraordinary nightlife based around cutting edge techno music. Within and around Berlin there is also some fantastic parks – it is a city which has everything. |
| Berlin Essentials |
Brandenburg Gate - Once the gate between East and West Germany it is now a symbol of the nation’s reunification. The gate is also a fantastic structure and to see it is to see history.
Kaiser-Wilhelm-Gedächtnis-Kirche - Almost completely destroyed by the British during World War II this church is one of Berlin’s most historic sites. The reconstructed church is dominated by blue stained windows and looks incredible, standing apart from the modern buildings by which it is engulfed.
Kulturforum - This cluster of fabulous museums and concert halls is located in the Potsdamer Plaza region of Berlin. Among its highlights are Berliner Philharmonie concert hall and the museum of Prints and Drawings.
Hamburger Bahnhof - This is one museum that is definitely worth a mention for both its architecture and art. The modern art section is particularly incredible with pieces from artists including Warhol and Lichtenstein.
Winterfeldt Market - The Winterfeldt market, which runs every Wednesday and Saturday, is one of the most colourful and enjoyable markets in Germany. Held in the attractive Winterfeldtplatz a fine selection of all things food can be bought here. |
