Chambery Essentials |
The historic city center - A visit to the city centre will give you an excellent idea of life in Chambery during the 13th century and onwards. The place Saint-Léger, in the heart of Old Chambery is where you will meet the locals. The streets with evocative names like rue Juiverie, rue Basse-du-Château, rue du Sénat, rue Croix-d’Or have been well preserved. The rue Croix-d’Or has the finest residences or "hôtels" as they are called. The hôtel de Châteauneuf is built in the style of the 17th century and the hôtel des Marches, an 18th century building, has a Louis 16th facade and a fine staircase.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau Museum - The Jean-Jacques Rousseau Museum was established in the country house where Jean-Jacques Rousseau stayed in the company of Madame de Warens from 1736 to 1742. The museaum has a historic atmosphere where the ghost of Jean-Jacques Rousseau still lingers. Jardin des Charmettes, was restored in 1993 and features a collection of medicinal plants, herbs, vegetable gardens and orchards of the 18th century. It conjures up the memory of the writer who was very fond of botany.
Castle of the Dukes of Savoy - This is the former residence of the Counts and Dukes of Savoy. It consists of a group of buildings dating from the Middle-Ages to the 19th century. Today the Castle houses the Préfecture and the Savoie County Council. The Treasury Tower (14th century) features a room with documentation which shows the development of Chambery and of the Castle since the 13th century. It also houses the family-tree of the House of Savoie.
The Fountain of the Elephants - This fountain was built in 1838 by the sculptor Sappey in honour of General de Boigne (1751-1830), who won glory and fortune in India. On his return to his native town, he generously carved out the monumental rue de Boigne, which is lined by Turin style porticoes, in the center of the old town. This statue represents four truncated elephants, placed in the form of the Savoie cross, holding up a column symbolizing a palm trunk on which General de Boigne stands.
The Chambéry Chimes - The Chambéry Chimes are set up in the Yolande tower of the gothic Sainte-Chapelle. These chimes, with seventy bells, are the largest in size in Europe and fourth largest in the world. The most recent chimes were built by the Paccard foundries. Weekly concert take place on Saturdays at 10.15 am and 5.30 pm. |
