This regional capital, lies in the heart of France. Even though it boasts a rich medieval past, it is still off the beaten path for most tourists. Its history goes back far beyond the Middle Ages. In 52 B.C., Caesar called it the finest city in Gaul. Today Bourges remains a rather sleepy provincial town, awakened only by the life surrounding the Institut Universitaire de Technologie.
One of the finest Gothic cathedrals in France, Cathédrale St-Etienne, rising gloriously out of the unpretentious and handsome medieval quarter, provides enough reason for a visit. Bourges is situated 238km (148 miles) south of Paris, 69km (43 miles) north-west of Nevers, 153km (95 miles) north-west of Vichy and 282km (175 miles) north-west of Lyon. |

Cathédrale St-Etienne - The exterior of this 12th century cathedral is characterised by the delicate, almost skeletal buttresses supporting an entire nave. This much praised example of Gothic architecture, is modelled on the Notre-Dame in Paris but incorporates improvements on the latter's design. The interior of the cathedral features 12th- to 13th century stained glass.
Palais Jacques-Coeur - This is one of France's greatest secular Gothic structures. Jacques Coeur who was born in Bourges around the year 1400, rapidly rose to the top of the social ladder. After being appointed as Finance Minister to the King and being made a nobleman, he began the construction of his Palace which was finished around 1450. This monument, unique in France for its time, illustrates personality of its builder. It is a forerunner of the mansions of the Renaissance period.

Prés Fichaux - The sculpted vegetation of this Art Deco garden gives it a special charm. The hedges, the distinctively French lime trees, the immaculate lawns and the beautifully trimmed yews are enhanced by the less orderly arrangement of the flower-beds and ponds. The Prés Fichaux was inaugurated in 1930 and it still boasts typically Art Deco ornaments and statues. The garden was added to the supplementary inventory of historic monuments in 1990.
The Museum of Décorative Arts - This museum boasts collections of French and Dutch furniture, including a rare carved, engraved ebony cabinet, a set of 16th and 17th century tapestries, works of enamel, ivory, glass and clocks and miniature furniture made by master craftsmen. The Flemish, Italian and French paintings lend an intimate atmosphere to this display. |

Festival Printemps de Bourges (mid-April) - This music festival offers dozens of concerts ranging from traditional French music to international rock.
Festival International des Groupes de Musique Experimentale de Bourges (beginning of June) - This is younger, free-form and high-impact music festival in which groups such as U2 have appeared.
Un Eté à Bourges (June) - During this festival, the streets are once again filled with musical performers and actors. You will be able to attend a line-up of free, outdoor performances of anything from local organ music to Chinese jazz. |
