| It was more than 6500 years that man installed himself here on the banks of the river Orbs, within two steps of the Mediterranean. The regional capital of Montpellier, it is in the south of France, near Spain. Wines of Beziers - Wine has been grown here for centuries and it still retains its title of Wine Capital, where the soil is rich in quality, the vine growers passionate and the the wines themselves of a high quality. The co-operative cellars Beziers -Boujon and the Closed Holy Martin are two of these world-class wine farms, producing Merlot, Muscatel, Cinsault, Viognier and Chardonnay-Sauvignon, to name a few.
Cathedrale St-Nazaire - Rebuilt in the Gothic style after it was burnt down in 1209, the towers are crenellated, so that it looks abit like a castle and a church. It stands on top of a hill above Pont-Vieux and on climbing the towers, you can see a view of the surrounding vineyards, the cloister and the bishop's garden.
Musee Biterrois - The city does not have many museums, but this one has a random collection of entertaining snippets of history from the times of the Greeks to the present day.
Walking tour - Besides the medieval quarter around the cathedral, visitors can explore the allees Paul-Riquet, which are lined with trees, cafes, restaurants and shops or the Plateau des Poetes, an English garden full of ponds and trees and designed by the creator of Paris' Bois de Boulogne.
Canal du Midi - Built in 1666 by over 12000 men, the canal meanders its way over 235 kilometres. At Beziers, you can join the boat and continue downstream, or enjoy a short trip on the canal around Beziers. |
