Auxerre Overview |
| Known as the town of art and history, it is situated north of Burgundy, 170kms from Paris. Auxerre has preserved its exceptional architectural heritage and its historical centre, furrowed narrow and tortuous streets recall the similarity to an architectual manual. The best way to explore Auxerre is on foot, where you view significant and remarkable monuments, meet picturesque streets, hear strange points of view and see animated districts. The soil in the area is rich in quality and has helped to produce noble wines, like Burgundy, Chardonnay and Pinot Noir. |

Auxerre Essentials |
The Cathedrale Saint - Etienne - A model of Gothic ornament style, the cathedral has gates with low remarkable reliefs and the canopies of the chorus and the transept conferring, shows a tonality particular to interior spaces and constitutes one of the most beautiful sets of this time in France. Treasures of invaluable manuscripts and miniatures with a very rare mural of "Christ with horse" are some of the wonders to view
.
The Tower of the Clock - In the heart of the pedestrian centre, is the Tower of the Clock. Supported on the tower, is a room containing the mechanisms of the Clock. The clock's characteristic comes from its two needles, which are distinct from each other by the sun and the moon at their ends and give the solar and lunar movements.
The Vault of the Visitandines - This traditional style vault has 80 polychrome wood sculptures carved by the French sculpter, Francois Brochet. His most famous one, being the "Massacre of the Innocent." The vault is only open in the summer.
The Abbey Saint- Germain - A complex monastic almost intact, the abbey has existed for more than 100 years and the crypts are decorated by the oldest murals found in France to date. Some other highlights include the storeroom, cloister, the Tower Midsummer's Day and the Roman chapter house.
Wire of the history - A walking tour of the town, you can discover the treasures of the town by following a coral colour line painted on the ground. This pedestrian circuit, with alternatives, lets you appreciate, at your own time and pace, the remarkable and significant monuments of Auxerre. |
