Useful Tips |
| Scenic drives - by Shaugn from Dublin |
| What a pleasure to drive through Finland! Traffic congestion is rare, even though there are relatively few motorways. The well-maintained road network covers the whole country and I can highly recommend motoring along minor country roads, where you can enjoy the wonderful Finnish scenery and national heritage landscapes which depict the origins of Finnish culture and heritage, typically dominated by lakes or rivers. |
Finland Cities |

Finland Overview |
Until 1917 Finland was under the rule of foreign nations which tried to force their own traditions and cultures on the Finns. It is probably because of this that the Finland is not very well understood, which is a shame because it is a fascinating country.
Finland is situated on the edge of Europe and borders with Russia. With a unique style and culture , Finland has many areas worth visiting, the most popular being the capital city Helsinki. Arguably the most endearing feature of Finland is its welcoming people who will endeavour to make your visit memorable.

Finland Essentials |
Helsinki - Originally modelled on St Petersburg, Helsinki is a small, beautiful and yet cosmopolitan city. The eastern European influence is clear but much of the city’s architecture reveals a proud Finnish nationalism. Helsinki has some fantastic museums and art galleries, but many find the cities extraordinary blend of new and old buildings just as interesting.
Åland – Aland is a province of Finland which is made up of many islands, over 6000 in fact. Aland has a different ‘atmosphere’ to Finland and there is cultural and language differences throughout the islands.
Turku – Turku is the oldest city in Finland and it is attractive and charming throughout. Despite being ravaged by fire several times during its history it still has some magnificent architecture, possibly the most impressive building being the 13th century cathedral.
Olavinlinna Castle – Situated in the Savonlinna lakes region of Finland, this magnificent castle dates back to the 15th century. It has been occupied by different invaders during the years and its style has been developed by each. The castle houses two museums which document the castle’s history and religion.
Rauma – This fantastic old town is built almost entirely of wood. As well as having some incredible buildings and attractions, Rauma also has great atmosphere about it with many local tradesmen working in small studios. |

Finland Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Helsinki Festival (Late August – Early September) - A top arts festival which starts as winter draws in.
Midsummer’s Day – The most important day in the Finish calendar, as the country celebrates the longest day of the year. |
