Helsinki Overview |
Originally modelled on St Petersburg, Helsinki is a small, beautiful and yet cosmopolitan city. The eastern European influence is clear but much of the cities architecture reveals a proud Finnish nationalism. The capital of Finland is located to the far south of the country which is why it offers such a unique blend of Scandinavia and eastern European traditions.
Helsinki has some fantastic museums and art galleries and many find the extraordinary blend of new and old buildings just as interesting. The Finnish capital also has a youthful feel with many bars and cafes being aimed at the population of Helsinki’s prominent university.

Helsinki Essentials |
Kiasma Museum of Contemporary Art - This world class museum was opened in 1998 as a place to exhibit the best contemporary art and allow experimentation of new ideas. Set in a unique modern building the Kiasma is home to the best of Finnish art from the 1950’s onwards.
Havis Amanda - Situated in the Kauppatori, or market square, this fantastic mermaid statue and fountain is one of the cities most prominent landmarks.
Temppeliaukio - The name literally means Church in the rock and that is exactly what it is. A fantastic sight and a must for visitors.
The Senaatinori - The senate square is Helsinki’s official centre. Russians influences run strong throughout the Senaatinori from the Statue of Tsar Alexander the 2nd to the University buildings.
Korkeasaari Zoo - Set on Korkeasaari Island, this zoo is over 100 years old and hosts many cold climate animals, such as snow leopards, in large natural enclosures. |

Helsinki Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Helsinki Festival (Late August – Early September) - A top arts festival which starts as winter draws in. Different events every year but they are guaranteed to be enjoyable and many will be free.
Christmas Period (December) - Christmas is celebrated with vigour in Helsinki and peaks with the big Lucia parade in mid December.
