| Denmark's fourth largest city, yet it still maintains a friendly, down-to-earth kind of atmosphere. The city is a stunning combination of new and old, which comes as no surprise because it just celebrated its 1310th birthday a few years ago. Small winding lanes are filled with medieval houses, and yet nearby, there are broad modern boulevards. Its abundance of good shops and lively nightlife sometimes gets it criticized for being to commercial. |

Aalborg Tower - On the hill side behind the Nordjyllands Kunstmuseum by the edge of a huge wooded area is this awkward tower which provides an incredible panoramic view of the city's smokestacks and steeples.
Monastery of the Holy Ghost - Constructed in 1431 this now home for the elderly, is one of Denmark's best-preserved monasteries, and is the only one still left which allowed entrance to both nuns and monks.
Lindholm Hoje - This Viking and Iorn Age burial ground has stones placed in the outline of a Viking ship enclosing its nearly 700 graves. A recently built museum at the entrence features chronicles of the Viking civilization.
Jens Bangs Stenhus - This beautiful 5 story 17th century stone house was built by a wealthy and eccentric merchant. He never managed to join the town council and so avenged himself by caricaturing his political enemies in gargoyles across the building, and himself sticking his tongue out at city hall.
Aalborghus Slot - This ancient castle on the waterfront is now used as a administrative office, but it does have a small dungeon which you can enter for free. |
