Useful Tips |
| Speed limit - by David Cresswell from Pisanets / S. Africa |
| I was stopped by police on main highway from Ruse to Sofia at about 1.00am. I was going 78kph through a 'blacked out' village. There was no clue unless you stopped and looked hard. The officers were very polite & understanding. One spoke very passable English. After a thorough document check they allowed me on my way without penalty. Due to the absence of street lighting & speed limit signs - assume 50kmp limit immediately you see a large white sign with village name. |

| There are alot of pothols, nothing new since the last time I was there in 1996. Police still hiding in the bushes. Is anything ever going to change? It's a beautiful country and I miss it a lot. I am having fun reading other people's coments. |

| Learn the cyrillic alphabet so you can read the road signs outside of main cities. Be very careful about potholes on all the roads there are more holes than road in some places!! Plus a motorist flashing his lights means there are police waiting behind the bushes!!! |
| Speed limit - by Rolf Mack from London |
| Be very careful about observing the speed limit. The traffic police seem to have nothing better to do than hide in bushes (literally) with radar guns. Be particularly careful on the main motorway from Varna to Sofia, as you come in to Sofia and the motorway suddenly stops and runs through the middle of a village! The speed limit goes from 100 to 40 in the space of a couple of km, and the traffic police are all over the place. |

| Stick to the speed limits on the main roads, especially at night. You won't believe the amount of police operating radar traps along the roads, and there's no warning whatsoever.
Whether it was pure luck or not, I don't know, but I was stopped for speeding on my second day there, and smiled profusely, made use of my very limited {learned that afternoon} Bulgarian, including merci repeated a fair few times, and got away with it.... |

| Stick to speed limits and have eyes in the back of your head when driving in the cities |
