Austria Overview |
People stereotype Austria as a country of Alpine peaks and tidy picturesque cities, and to be honest this is not far from the truth. But Austria is anything but boring or one dimensional, with beautiful countryside and cities which are packed with culture.
Many visitors come to Austria for its ski resorts which are amongst the best in the world, and offer a range of winter sports. Away from the slopes the Austrian countryside is stunning, with a range of terrific landscapes. Another of Austria's highpoints is its marvellous cities, especially Vienna and Salzburg. |

Austria Essentials |
Vienna - One of the most popular destinations in Europe, Vienna is a delightful city. Its architecture is superb throughout and is a legacy from when the Hofburg's controlled much of Europe. There are also a large number of world class art galleries and museums.
Salzburg - An independent state until 1816, Salzburg is now the 4th largest city in Austria and is famous as the birthplace of Wolfgang Mozart. Salzburg's independence allowed it to develop an Italian feel and because of this it is often referred to as the 'German Rome'. The city has been maligned to as boring and lifeless but in modern times nothing could be further from the truth, with an exciting nightlife and fantastic restaurants.
Grossglockner Road - This road was built in the 1930's and offers fantastic sights all along its 50 kilometres. The most spectacular views are when the road passes through the spectacular Hohe Tauern National Park.
Eisriesenwelt Caves - More than 40km of ice passages can be explored at the Eisrienwelt Caves. This spectacular sight is well worth a visit if you get the chance.
St Anton - The largest and most popular of the ski resorts in the fantastic Arlberg region of Austria. St Anton caters for all ability levels, ages and budgets. |

Austria Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Life Ball (May) - The Life Ball is one of Austria's most prominent events and is even screened on TV. With top names from the music world and a host of celebrities involved tickets can be difficult to get hold of. If you're not lucky enough to get a ticket you can still enjoy the excellent free fashion parade on the steps outside the venue.
Salzburg Festival (July - August) - Five weeks of high calibre classical music and Opera throughout the city of Salzburg every summer. |
