MacKay Overview |
| Named after John MacKay who came from New England in 1860 and opened up the area to pastoral settlement. The area is an idyllic, unspoilt are in central Queensland and stretches from the Great Barrier Reef to the Outsback.MacKay is an unspoilt tropical city set beside the Pioneer River and famous as Queensland's sugar city. Some attractions, besides the excellent beaches, include the MacKay Marina, the ambient palm-shaded city centre, the Botanic gardens and Entertainment centre. |

MacKay Marina Village - It has a tropical feel, with tropical palms lining the waterfront esplanade with a view beyond to the tropical islands. Dolphins and flying fish and, between June and December, migrating whales are regular visitors. It is also the perfect place to sit back and watch the super yachts roll in at sunset. Regular snorkelling, diving and reef tours leave from here.
MacKay Botanic Gardens - A picturesque landscape overlooking the Eulamere lagoon and showcasing the unique, diverse and spectacular vegetation as well as interpreting many of the physical features of the area. The cultural heritage of the city is also displayed in its specialised gardens.
Artscape MacKay - This regional art gallery and museum provides visitors with an opportunity to learn about the people and history of MacKay.The stories of these people, the industries and culture are told through a unique multimedia and museum display,
Black's Beach - The area's longest stretch of beach, lined with about 6km's of tropical gardens, Blacks beach is a great place to watch the Pacific roll in along its sandy coastline. Fishing is allowed and the beach is regularly patrolled.
Heritage Walk - The walk transports you back to the early days of the settlers by highlighting some of MacKay's magnificent architecture. The 90 minute walk covers 22 older buildings showcasing the prosperity and confidence of the city. Some of the buildings included are the Court House, Parish Church, Customs House and the Facades of Sydney Street. |

MacKay Calendar - Pick of the Year's Events |
Tubular Cels - A wild and wet exhibition of Loons, Goons and Surfin' Toons and explores the Australian surfing lifestyle through caricatures, cartooning, comic art, design and illustration and is held from the beginning of September to the end of October.
Wintermoon Festival - A four day music extravaganza held in April and includes local musicians presenting a programme of music, dance, song and verse with something for everybody. |
