Useful Tips |
| Other - by Cees from Rotterdam |
| When I arrived in Oran I rent a car and get round to all places. Public transport not so good. You must take the style to drive like the local people and you get a move on. Please give small tip to the man who gives you the directions to the parking and watch your car. Never to leave things in your car and lock up your car. |
Algeria Overview |
| From the shiny white city of Algiers to the arid sands of the Sahara, Algeria is a place of many contrasts, a meeting place for the old and new, sea and desert, mountain and plain.
Algeria is the second-largest country in Africa and is situated in north-western Africa, with the northern coastline running along the Mediterranean Sea. |

Algeria Essentials |
Oasis VillageTaghit - Found on the west side of the Big Western Erg between Bechar and Beni Abbes, Taghit is a beautiful oasis with a lot of shade under the big palm trees. For an excellent view you can climb the high sand downs in the early morning or late afternoon.
Tamanrasset - An oasis after 5 days of only desert, its a great place to relax; go shopping and meet the locals. It is situated in the Sahara desert, 1,400 metres above sea level in the Hoggar mountains. It is by far the largest city in central Sahara with 40,000 inhabitants.
Tassili N' Ajjer - This museum and art gallery in open air has a fabulous landscape with surrealistic rock formations. The base of the sandstone walls was eroded by rivers through time and provided shelters for prehistoric people, these are the places where you can view rock paintings.
El Golea - This is the most easterly oasis of the Grand Erg Occidental and is one of the biggest oasis towns in the south with more than 200,000 palm trees. Here you can climb the skar El Menia, visit the Bel Bachir and drink tea with the locals.
Sahara Desert - This is the largest desert in the world and is about 1610 km wide and about 5150 km long from east to west. It consists of 3 regions: the western Sahara, the central Ahaggar Mountains and the Tibesti massif, and the Libyan desert in the east. |
